NINE

Mason woke feeling hot and realised a supple female body curled into him. He glanced down into Sophie’s sleeping face, and a smile curled his lips.

He’d warned her not to touch him when he’d gotten into bed, and she’d shuffled to the far end of the bed. Yet, somehow, she’d ended up curled into him. To be fair, the room was freezing, just the way he liked it. However, she seemed to be the opposite and didn’t enjoy the arctic blast from the aircon. Hence she’d subconsciously sought out the nearest source of heat—his body.

He'd threatened to chain her and make her sleep on the floor if she touched him. Yet, the punishment was far from his mind this morning. Instead, he stroked his fingertips along her arm in a slow caress, moving upwards from elbow to shoulder. She stirred and exhaled into his chest but didn’t wake up.

The smooth feel of the water-proof fabric on her shoulder had his dick hardening and his pulse rate skyrocketing. She bore his mark under the dressing. Last night he’d branded her with his knife, carved his initial—M—into her skin. It wasn’t deep enough to scar permanently. Over time it would heal and flake, and fresh epidermis would replace it like it never existed. Like he never existed.

A weight settled on his chest. For a few seconds, he struggled to breathe.

Why was he filled with dread about the brand on Sophie’s skin disappearing? He’d marked her knowing it would be temporary. Just like he’d brought her here, knowing she would only stay for a few days.

Nothing in life lasted forever.

He’d learned that lesson the hard way with his father's death. He’d assumed his old man would live a long life and always be in Mason’s life until he became a father. Now, that dream was gone.

A lump sat in his throat, and his eyes smarted, tears clouding them. He withdrew gently, not wanting to wake her, not wanting her to see him being vulnerable.

People assumed many things about him. Mostly that he was unfeeling and crazy. Perhaps he was both things. Sure, his brain was wired differently from other people's. But his late father had made him feel sane. The man had never used his idiosyncrasies against him. Had only shown him right from wrong. Shown him respect. Taught him about honour and loyalty. About protecting his responsibilities.

Grey light filtered through the blinds as he grabbed a towel and walked out of the bedroom across the corridor to the family bathroom. He flung the towel over the chrome rail, used the WC, flushed it, and entered the walk-in glass cubicle. He turned the faucet and stood aside as water cascaded from the showerhead. He waited until steam rose before he stepped under the hot spray. Although he loved a cold room, he loved a hot shower, a tale of two extremes like his life.

And just like in his life, some of his actions might seem extreme. Branding Sophie, for one. He understood how people would view his actions.
